Detoxing is often touted by mainstream media as an effective way to lose weight and rid your body of toxins, contributing to the improvement of your overall well-being. But even if this is the case, many still see it as some type of gimmick — a dangerous one at that. The lack of further education about detox leads some people to approach it the wrong way. They either restrict their diet to the point of starvation or only resort to fad smoothies or juices.
The right approach to detox isn’t about depriving yourself of food, but rather introducing healthier food in your diet to drive out toxins. While you still have to watch your calorie intake, there’s no reason for you to stop eating altogether. All you have to do is switch to a much healthier diet, consuming food like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, probiotic-rich foods, water (lots of it), and supplements.
Why you need a detox
You may not be aware of it much, but you’re inadvertently exposing your body to toxins every day. From the chemical content of your food to exposure to cigarette smoke, pesticides, household cleaners, and detergents to inhalation of air pollution, you’re introducing toxins to your body more than you realize. And while you have organs like the kidney, colon, and lungs to eliminate all these contaminants naturally, there may be times where they’re working into overdrive and not able to flush out toxins because yo take in more than they cleanse out.
Signs that you should need a detox
You should make it a point to listen to your body in order to know when it’s time to do a detox. You would know you need one if you experience the following symptoms:
- Digestive distress
- Insatiable cravings
- A constant state of exhaustion
- Lack of focus
- Brain fog
- Skin issues
- Anxiety and depression
- Frequent and unexplained headaches
- Sudden weight gain
How often you should detox
There’s no hard and fast rule that specifies how many times a year you should detox. But as a general guideline, you should be able to tell when you need one by listening to your body. If you experience the symptoms above, don’t ignore them and take them as a sign to start doing a detox. Additionally, it’s also important to remember that detoxing can be a preventative measure. Even if you’re not feeling particularly awful, you can still do detoxing to prevent any sort of ailment. Just make sure not to go overboard or risk incurring side effects like malnourishment or weight gain. It’s best to be careful about how you approach detoxing. Drink lots of water, aim for 8 to 9 hours of sleep every day, eat your meals on time, and most importantly, eat right. Practice self-control in consuming things like alcohol. If possible, you should keep your hands off them even after your detoxing period is over. You’ll feel much healthier when you don’t voluntarily expose yourself to toxins.
